When Should My Toddler Move to a Big Kid Bed?

By Paola Mendoza, Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant (CPSM) · Last updated November 2026

Quick answer: Most toddlers do best in a crib until close to 3 years old. Moving earlier often leads to bedtime battles and toddlers getting out of bed over and over, because they don't yet have the impulse control to stay put. Good reasons to switch sooner are a toddler who keeps climbing out and could get hurt, or one who has outgrown the crib, at about 35 inches tall.

Your toddler is getting big. Friends with kids the same age already moved theirs to a "big kid bed," and the store has the cutest little beds on display. It's tempting. But a crib is one of the few things that helps a toddler stay in bed at night, and once it's gone, it's hard to go back.

What age should a toddler move to a bed?

There's no exact age, but most toddlers do best when they move closer to 3 years old. Around that age, children start to understand rules like "we stay in bed until morning" and can actually follow them. At 18 months or 2 years, a toddler bed gives them freedom right when they're testing every limit.

Good reasons to make the switch

  • Your toddler keeps climbing out of the crib. If they're climbing out regularly and could get hurt, safety comes first.

  • Your toddler has outgrown the crib. Once they're about 35 inches tall, or the top rail is below chest level when they stand, it's time.

  • Your toddler is close to 3 and asking for it. Excitement about a big bed can make the move much easier.

  • Potty training at night. If your toddler is ready to use the potty overnight, they'll need to be able to get out of bed.

Not great reasons to switch

  • To fix sleep problems. A new bed won't solve bedtime battles or night wakings. It usually makes them worse.

  • During a regression. Wait until things calm down. Here's what's happening during the 18 month sleep regression.

  • Right before or after a new baby. Give your toddler time to adjust to one big change at a time.

How to make the move go smoothly

  • Toddler-proof the whole room. Once your toddler can get out of bed, their bedroom becomes their crib. Anchor furniture to the wall, cover outlets, move window cords out of reach and consider a gate at the door.

  • Get them involved. Let your toddler help pick the sheets or a stuffed animal for the new bed. Talk about it for a few days before the big night.

  • Keep everything else the same. Same bedtime, same routine, same room if you can. Here's how to build a bedtime routine that actually works.

  • Set one simple rule. "We stay in bed until morning." Say it the same way every night.

  • Decide ahead of time how you'll respond. Your toddler will test the new freedom. Calm and consistent beats long conversations at 9:00 p.m. Choose your approach and keep it for at least a full week.

Expect a honeymoon, then a test

Many toddlers sleep beautifully in their new bed for the first few nights, and then they realize they can get out. That's normal. It doesn't mean the move failed. It means your toddler is checking whether the rule is real.

Toddler bed FAQ

What is the best age to move a toddler to a bed?

Most toddlers do best in a crib until close to 3 years old. By then, they're better able to understand and follow a rule like staying in bed until morning.

Is 2 years old too young for a toddler bed?

For many toddlers, yes. Moving at 2 often leads to more bedtime battles and more time out of bed. Unless your toddler is climbing out or too tall for the crib, it's usually worth waiting.

Should I move my toddler to a bed before the new baby arrives?

If you need the crib, make the switch at least 6 to 8 weeks before the baby arrives, or wait until a few months after. Moving right before or right after the baby comes piles two big changes on your toddler at once.

My toddler climbs out of the crib. Do I have to switch now?

Not always. Lowering the mattress to the lowest setting and using a sleep sack can stop many climbers. If your toddler keeps climbing out and could get hurt, it's time to move to a bed and make the room safe.
